Tile Flooring Guide

Kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms—you spend so much time every day in these rooms, so you certainly require a stylish design.  How do you balance both design and function?  Tile is the answer and we have it at FDW Carpet One Floor & Home. Unlike hardwood and carpet, tile does not absorb water. Tile is also extremely strong and durable, so it can withstand most drops and heavy foot traffic.  It is therefore no surprise that tile is the most practical, and probably the most popular, choice in kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms.

Expert Advice - Choose the Perfect Tile

Join our very own Jim Aaron, VP of Merchandising for Carpet One Floor & Home, for some information on the three basic types of tile flooring: ceramic, porcelain, and stone.

What are the Different Types of Tile

Ceramic tile is the most widely-used type of tile.  It is available in a plethora of different shapes, sizes, and colors, so it can accommodate any room and any design that you have in mind.  Also, ceramic tile is water and heat resistant, and it will not fade or stain over time.  Floor tiles are thicker and can handle foot traffic and potential drops, but all ceramic tiles, including the thinner wall and backsplash tiles, are extremely durable.  As a result, ceramic tile is considered a permanent option.

Even given ceramic tile’s durability, it is not recommended for outdoor use. Instead, we recommend porcelain tile.  Porcelain tile is denser than ceramic tile, which means that it has even more strength.  It also is more water resistant.  Therefore, porcelain tile is prepared for anything that Mother Nature throws its way.  It's worth noting, however, that porcelain tile is more difficult to install than ceramic style.

For both aesthetic and functional reasons, tile can be layered on top with a glaze. Glazed tile has more color and shine, so it definitely can stand out in any room.  Plus, the glaze protects against water and stains.  Tile can remain unglazed, which actually is preferred for commercial use.  Unglazed tile does not show wear and is slip resistant, so it’s most useful in areas with high traffic.

Where can Tile be Installed?

Tile can be installed in kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and other areas with moisture. Further, tile has been the time-tested traditional option for kitchens and bathrooms alike. Tile is such a versatile product though that is can really be installed anywhere in your home. Other places tile can be installed include your laundry room, basement, mud room, and even in an entryway. Plus, unlike other flooring options, tile is suitable for walls, backsplashes, showers, and other areas.  Learn more about the different tile types.
