Expert Advice - Hardwood Styles

Join our very own Jim Aaron, VP of Merchandising for Carpet One Floor & Home, for some information on all the different looks and style available in hardwood floors.

Hardwood Styles

Hardwood has never been a one-size-fits-all type of floor and is available in several different styles. There is modern and traditional hardwood flooring, as well as rustic hardwood flooring options that emphasize wood's natural character. The different styles of hardwood are characterized by features such as plank length and width, wood grains, color, shine, and even texture.

Types of Wood

Hardwood is also available in different types of wood. The different hardwood options include maple, cherry, oak, and birch, among others. Each wood option offers unique shades and character, and they also feature different levels of durability and wear resistance. We also offer more unique options such as cork and bamboo, which can give the interior of your home an exotic look.

What Is The Difference Between Solid and Engineered Hardwood?

Solid hardwood is one solid piece of wood from top to bottom. On average you can choose from ¾” or 5/16”, but the thickness can vary. Solid hardwood performs best when installed above or on grade. Solid hardwood can also be refinished to extend its lifetime in your home. Engineered hardwood floors are made of multiple real wood veneers whose grains run in different directions in order to increase stability. This allows the floors to resist expanding and contracting during weather changes. Engineered hardwood too can be refinished.

Where Can Hardwood Be Installed?

Popular spots for hardwood are bedrooms and living rooms. Solid hardwood is limited to being installed in on or above level rooms of your home. Engineered hardwood, however, can be installed on all levels of your home including in a finished basement. It can also handle moderate foot traffic and can be installed in hallways and entryways. Be sure to never install hardwood in places like bathrooms or laundry rooms which can cause significant moisture damage.
